About

Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company, known as Mahyco, is one of India's oldest and largest private seed companies, founded in 1962 by Dr. B.R. Barwale in Jalna, Maharashtra, and headquartered in Mumbai. The company develops and markets hybrid seeds across a broad range of crops including cotton (Bt and conventional), rice, corn, sorghum, pearl millet, sunflower, mustard, wheat, tomato, onion, brinjal, okra, cabbage and cauliflower. Mahyco holds significant proprietary germplasm in Indian crop varieties and conducts field trials across multiple agro-climatic zones through an extensive network of research stations in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The company distributes seed through approximately 80,000 retail outlets across India, reaching smallholder and commercial farm customers. International sales programmes extend to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, the Philippines, Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania, where similar smallholder farming conditions and crop preferences align with Mahyco's variety portfolio. Mahyco has a historic partnership with Bayer Crop Science (formerly Monsanto), through which Bt cotton technology was introduced to the Indian market.
