Vale Mozambique operates the Moatize open-cast thermal and coking-coal mine in Tete Province — one of the world's largest undeveloped coal basins — producing coking coal and thermal coal exported to Asian and European steel mills and power generators via the Nacala Logistics Corridor railway and port. A wholly-owned subsidiary of Brazilian mining giant Vale SA, the Moatize project represents one of the largest foreign direct investments in Mozambican history. Vale's coal is shipped from the deep-water Nacala port, providing competitive ocean-freight access to Asian markets.
