Het lijkt nog niet zo lang geleden dat we onze eerste ervaring met balanswielen deelden en uitlegden waarom het veel cooler is dan een fiets met extra wielen. Omdat het een fiets is die een heel jong kind - 2 jaar of zelfs jonger - helemaal zelf kan besturen, er op elke ondergrond mee kan rijden, er behendig mee kan manoeuvreren, lange afstanden kan afleggen, heuvels op en af kan rijden en zoveel kan rijden als zijn hartje begeert, met veel plezier. Net als in de rest van de wereld was het iets nieuws en drong beetje bij beetje Letland binnen - vergezeld van veel sceptische opmerkingen en ongelovige blikken. In werkelijkheid zijn er echter acht jaar verstreken sinds ons eerste balanswiel, zijn we slimmer en meer ervaren geworden op dit gebied, en is de situatie in de wereld en in Letland fundamenteel veranderd.
