Zouerate bölgesindeki Guelb El Aouj ve Guelb II açık ocak madenlerini işletiyor ve yılda 13 milyon tonun üzerinde demir cevheri konsantresi üretiyor. Afrika'nın en büyük demir cevheri ihracatçılarından biri olup, esas olarak Nouadhibou limanı üzerinden Avrupa ve Asyalı çelik fabrikalarına sevkiyat yapmaktadır.
