A US Senate investigation traced the source of counterfeit electronic parts entering the defense supply chain and found the mechanism itself, not just the scale: used chips pulled from electronic waste, sanded down and remarked as new.     Electronic waste shipped to China is hand-disassembled, sometimes washed in river water and dried on city sidewalks. Parts are then sanded to remove the original part number and other markings, 'blacktopped' (recoated) to hide the sanding marks, and remarked with false part numbers, date codes or 'military-grade' markings using commercial-grade printing equipment, then sold as new.

    Your control: Require full lot traceability back to an authorized distributor or the original component manufacturer for any critical part; for parts without a clean chain of custody, commission independent testing (X-ray, decapsulation or electrical curve trace) rather than accepting a distributor's paperwork alone.

    Your control: Buy critical components only from a distributor accredited to a counterfeit-avoidance standard (such as AS6081) or vetted by an industry anti-counterfeiting body, and independently verify the specific date/lot code against the original component manufacturer's own records rather than the broker's certificate alone.

    Counterfeiters increasingly target current, easy-to-find parts, not only obsolete ones

    A common assumption is that counterfeiting only targets hard-to-find, obsolete, or long-lead-time parts sourced through desperate last-resort brokers. Industry tracking shows counterfeiters now target actively produced, readily available parts just as often, meaning a component being in normal production is not itself a safety signal.

Is counterfeit-chip risk mainly a defense/aerospace problem, not a concern for ordinary electronics buyers?

No. CBP's own current seizure data shows consumer electronics, not just defense-grade parts, is one of the largest counterfeit-seizure categories at the US border every year. The risk applies to any electronics buyer sourcing components or finished goods through a broker.

Can a counterfeit chip be identified by checking the printed part number and date code?
