About
Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa operates the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric power station on the Zambezi River in Tete Province — one of Africa's largest hydroelectric dams with 2,075 MW installed capacity — generating electricity primarily for export to South Africa's Eskom under a long-term power-purchase agreement via the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission line to Apollo substation in Pretoria. Majority-owned by the Mozambican government and minority-owned by Portugal's REN, HCB supplies power to Mozambique's northern grid and Zimbabwe under separate agreements. The reservoir, Lake Cahora Bassa, is one of Africa's largest artificial lakes.
