Morupule Coal Mine is Botswana's sole operating coal mine, located near Palapye in central Botswana, and is majority-owned by a subsidiary of the Botswana Development Corporation. The mine supplies bituminous thermal coal to the adjacent Morupule B Power Station, the country's primary electricity generator, reducing Botswana's dependence on South African electricity imports. Morupule also exports coal to regional markets in Zimbabwe and Zambia. Expansion plans under Meepong Resources aim to develop the deeper Sekaelo shaft.
